Love it ✊

Are you using miners for a heat source?

Yes I do have a miner for heating, but it hasn’t been on much lately. The freeze dryers and other equipment I have in there generate a lot of heat when they are operating, and now the weather is warming up quite a bit.

Where are you guys in Longmont? I’m passing through Boulder for 10 days. Would love to check out your operation

Sure, when’s that? Send me a DM.

Can the mycelial mass in the substrate be used for extraction as well, or is it only the fruiting bodies that are useful?

The mycelium does have plenty of good stuff it, but you would only want to use mycelium grown on brown rice flower or something similar. Many lions mane supplements are made from myceliated brown rice. But you wouldn’t want to use a big sawdust substrate for that.

That makes sense.

yes you can extract psilocybin from fully colonized media, it is present in roughly the same proportions in all parts of the fungus

in the netherlands they bypass laws against selling fruit bodies with a modified growing regime that causes the pins to abort growing into mushrooms and instead you get "truffles" which are basically amorphous blobs of mycelia that wanted to become mushrooms. i think the trick is darkness and slightly lower humidity.

i should add that extracting psilocybin can be a bit tricky and the product is quite unstable and won't last long. also, if you use the same technique on dung lovers it is full of urea and stinks like piss, and is a golden goo sorta substance.

i wouldn't be able to say what is the best way to do it but i think isopropanol is the best solvent, you want to dehydrate the colonised media thoroughly, at cool temps (use calcium choride) and dry your isopropanol with baked epsom salts, then filter the epsom salt out of it (doesn't take much, once you drop the powdered dehydrated salt in and it doesn't glom up the iso is dry). isopropanol is the best because methanol and ethanol, especially ethanol, cannot be dried like this and the water reduces the durability of the extract. suffice it to say you want to store it in the freezer, also. i think it's possible to mix it with gelatin or agar to make jellies so you can dose it adequately, it's fairly strong stuff by weight, 2-10mg of the extract is enough to send you to fairyland.

I kinda figured fungal compounds existed everywhere in the organism but have rarely heard anyone talk about that.

i'm pretty sure that in the first book on it, pseudonymously published by Terrence and Dennis Mckenna under the names "O.T. Oss and O.N. Oeric" they talk about how you can harvest mycelia straight. i think it does depend on letting the fungus fully eat the rice media though if you are just going to dry it out and gently crush the mycelia out of the vermiculite medium, unless you want to extract, but from experience, extracting the actives efficiently takes solid lab skills.

These are truffles and they are actually an entirely different species, P. tampanensis. P. cubensis will never produce truffles no matter how you grow them. Sometimes people grow mutant blobs from strains like Penis Envy and think they are truffles, but those are just mutant mushrooms.

Sounds like you’ve done this a few times lol
