Over the past few years, my foundational force in life has become the knowledge that 60 percent of humanity is overwhelmingly vile, and that’s an optimistic estimate. For every happy family, a cruel and miserable one; for each blissfully loved child, an abused child’s body, thrown into a hastily dug up grave; for every beloved pet, a tortured, mutilated animal. Telling my younger sister that there are more good people out in the world than bad feels like a moral failure - like a waiter recommending a dish he knows will make you sick.
