The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences currently has the most inclusive disability inclusion services of any US award show.

That and, even still, Deaf viewers have to tune into a separate stream to view ASL. The Ceremony isn’t Broadcast Picture-in-Picture.

Same re: Rihanna’s interpreter. She went viral after the fact, many viewers didn’t know she was there real time.

A win => if you click the ASL stream, you are viewing Deaf interpreters.

How does a Deaf interpreter know what to sign real-time?

There is a hearing interpreter listening to the audio feed of the ceremony. The hearing interpreter is slightly off camera and signing what they hear to the on camera interpreter.

The Deaf interpreter is most appropriate to be on camera because ASL is their native language.

Next step is for broadcasters, organizations and production teams to be on the same page 💜
