Have been falling asleep to the audiobook of Spektrum by Sergej Lukianenko, who’s books I have enjoyed since I was a kid. It still holds up.
The race of the Closers (Die Schließer) offer a teleportation system that connects the universe with the fee for transportation being a story which helps them cope with their loneliness and sadness.
Personally listened to it in German.
