The interior of the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption, designed by Pietro Belluschi and Pier Luigi Nervi, creates a powerful spiritual atmosphere through light and geometry.

Completed in 1971, the 190-foot hyperbolic paraboloid ceiling is lined with 1,680 triangular coffers that soften and scatter natural light across the nave. Ascending stained glass windows form a glowing cross, flooding the 255-square-foot space with illumination and symbolizing divine guidance.

Four massive pylons anchor the structure into bedrock, framing the space with dramatic vertical lines. Suspended above the altar, Richard Lippold’s kinetic sculpture of radiating metal lines draws the eye upward, reinforcing the cathedral’s theme of spiritual ascent.
