Every single search engine absolutely sucks. Borderline unusable. Impossible to research anything from “obscure” resources.

Google, DuckDuckGo, Brave, Bing.

None of them return the results I want. (Normally just a bunch of NPC news results and other “trusted” sources).

AI is decent for search, but you can’t trust the info it feeds since it was trained using the same garbage.

Using commands and deep search terms helps, but still very difficult to find what you want.

Is the internet just cooked at this point?

Dead Internet Theory? How do you all find what you are looking for?

What ARE you looking for tho?

Not exactly relevant. Basically anything I search returns results from the same small group of sources. Generally every search has a news website in the top 5 even if the topic has nothing to do with news. (Ie. search “disk golfing in Wyoming”- get some random article about from CBS). The further down a rabbit hole you want to go, the worse it gets.

Have you not noticed the degradation of search engines? Maybe I am misremembering, but I don’t recall search being this garbage 10 years ago. You don’t even have the option to view “page 10” anymore since it’s just a “load more” button now.

I know Google made changes to how the search results are retrieved (prioritizing “trusted sources”)…but I am curious if part of it is just the sheer amount of content on the internet now- since all of the search engines suck as well.

Hmm…interesting. Yeah I haven’t noticed a decline in general search like what you’re describing most of my search on Google still renders relevant and precise content. That said, I have noticed other issues like - searching for a source video used to return YouTube references (which work me) and now everything is spanned with TikTok links which I refuse to engage with.

When thinking about news content. My resting position is that everything that finds me via social media is doctored / manipulated as a minimum. So if something seems particularly shocking or emotive I’ll take the time to see if it’s real (it usually isn’t or the thing is real but to a far lesser degree than what is being proposed).

If I’m seeing something BBC, WSJ, Aljazeera, or SCMP, I’ll rate it more highly but still take the resting bias of the source into consideration. I’ll also often search at those sources directly to subvert google’s filtering.

Finally I’ve taken a hard stance of balancing everything that’s being pushed in the news against the empirical evidence of my lived social life outside my home. And it is at still point, almost to a rule, that the media narrative on any side, completely breaks down.

Dang.. I am shocked you haven’t noticed a decline. I thought this was affecting everyone. Maybe my search queries are not specific enough? I don’t get TikTok but a lot of my searches return Reddit results now (which I don’t even use).

Agreed on the news stuff fasho. But the point I was trying to make is that search engines are forcing these results down my throat every single time, when it isn’t even relevant to the search. Frustrating.

Yeah that’s weird. My searches are still on target. You might be in some customer test where they’re testing out changes to the algo something - ie do we make some money or serve some other perverse incentive by making the search returns more stupid and irrelevant…

Tried kagi?

AFAIK they jave a free tier for 100 searches.

Never heard of it. Looking into it now. Thanks!

I think it was due to the gamification of the search algorithms from SEO people
