Replying to Avatar Currency of Distrust

Fun story - many years ago I was working at a small IT services firm as a bizdev guy. The guy who owned it was a coke head who put me in very uncomfortable settings, multiple times.

So, I left and joined a competitor. Part of my job was creating lists of potential clients to pursue. At both jobs, I scraped Google and other open data sources to do so.

Previous employer freaked out when he found out I was at a competitor and filed a police report that I had stolen IP.

A detective interviewed me and, with a straight face, insisted that using Google to do this was stealing IP đź«

The police are allowed to lie to you. Reminder that you should never talk to them without representation (except perhaps to mention that the guy who filed a false report against you seemed to leave strange lines of flour lying around everywhere).

Ya, I was only 20 and didn’t know how insane interactions with police can be. The new employer was also a dick and let me talk to them without a lawyer, even though they knew better.

Thankfully, I didn’t fall for any of the tricks this detective tried to pull on me.
