-THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE-

During World War II, American soldiers personalized their standard-issue Colt M1911 pistols by crafting transparent grips known as "sweetheart grips." Utilizing Plexiglas salvaged from downed aircraft, they replaced the original wooden grips with clear ones, inserting photographs of loved ones or pin-up girls beneath the surface. This practice allowed servicemen to carry a tangible reminder of home into combat, serving both as a morale booster and a unique form of trench art.
Beyond their sentimental value, these grips had practical advantages. The transparency of the Plexiglas enabled soldiers to check ammunition levels without removing the magazine, a feature particularly useful in the field. While sweetheart grips were most prevalent during WWil, they have since become cherished collectibles, symbolizing the personal stories and emotional resilience of those who served.
