I will say it does sound like you’re saying the person you were previously was unacceptable and this version of you is more acceptable to me. Tone and context are also really important. So you probably know better if it was said in a mean way. Sometimes we can think we’re saying a compliment but we weren’t thoughtful enough in our wording.

Even if someone is offended in what you consider a compliment and you think they’re being overly sensitive. It can be helpful to ask what it brought up for them. Better to seek understanding in relationships than trying to be right.
