VPN services are companies that have to comply to the laws of the countries where they are located ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Eyes ). You actually only change your exit point provider who has all your data stored.

Imho VPN services only make sense if you dont run your own VPN server or you're in an unsafe environment like hotel wifi or you like to permanently circumvent geoblocking on a high stream rate. To be safer in potential malicious environments you might want to set up your own VPN to your home or on a cheap paid VPS.

If you still want a paid VPN provider, the only I would recommend is MullvadVPN.
