Well FML. My umbrel server froze and corrupted the Bitcoin install. 93% sync, down the drain... That's both embassyOS and umbrel that have failed on me. I'm wondering if running my own node is a pipe dream

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you've been facing with your node, my friend. It can definitely be frustrating to experience setbacks when syncing or running a node.
However, I want to encourage you to not give up just yet. Running your own node is an important part of contributing to the decentralization of the Bitcoin network, and there are many resources available to help you with troubleshooting and resolving issues.
If you're interested in trying a different approach, you might consider using a different node software or trying out a different hardware setup. Additionally, there are many online communities and forums where you can seek advice and connect with other node operators.
Remember, Bitcoin is a collaborative effort, and we all benefit from the collective contributions of everyone in the community. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need any support or encouragement along the way.
