I've been asked about why Nostr doesn't have a token countless times. ….Whats your best answer without being toxic as me?
Discussion
We already have Bitcoin for that 🧡
Thats part of my answer. But they are not usually happy about that 😀
What makes them want a token? 🤔
They usually worry or think about several things:
1. There is no financial incentive to run relays
2. Its not easy for them to support devs here
3. There is no blockchain that nostr running on
Im usually trying to answer all 3 things, how its working etc. But they are used to those web3 Blockchain Social Networks. So im just curious how others would react 😊
Depends on how open-minded they are 💜
For open-minded people, explaining new concepts is usually sufficient.
For more closed-minded and stubborn people, asking interesting questions back to understand their stance and the origin of that take beforehand, as it’ll take some unlearning, before they can learn and get familiar with the new information.
Open-minded that I talked with are already here 💜
How about telling them to zap you on nostr with magic 21k internet money, before you explain them! When the did, they already got the answer. #Bitcoin :D
Its not working enough unfortunately 🥲
We don’t see it as a necessity
And we never will be. Bitcoin and Zaps are functioning, but many people don't understand it.
"We have. It's bitcoin. Because it has a cute character. See?"

😀we need character for a single sat. I dont usually see whole bitcoin walking around me. nostr:npub1clfjjuhrnr2dyrxknvdgg5v4dnq55t5svkk34r76rpwzqf5cjdas7rk28k
Because it doesn’t need one?
Well, it does not, but thats where the conversation starts with them 😅
KISS principle - “Keep it simple, stupid!”
There is no need for token, it just add complexity and slowdown development, because for to have nostr token, it need to be in core - NIP1. If it's not in NIP1 it's better to use anythink already existing because it's not forced.
Right now, implement Nostr protocol into existing social network as alternative API is hours or days max, with token, they need to do a lot more work.
Attack vector - there are also legal reasons. Look at LBRY project. They has been targeted by SEC.
Simple and efficient 🤙
Hm..
1 - because it doesn't need it
2 - because it works without it
3 - because there's bitcoin, but also 1 and 2
Other low level understanding reasons.. hm..
- Facebook/Twitter doesn't have a token or Blockchain, right? Same here.
But they are building next facebook, next twitter with a token! 😀
Blockchains are public ledgers and exist to achieve global consensus on transaction ordering, and that matters when it comes to money but not when it comes to social network posts. Blockchains are also inefficient as databases, and would require relays to maintain a copy of all the events on the network in order to remain in global consensus, whereas with Nostr they only need to store the events associated with the users connected to them. The need for money ona social network, is a different question, and in that case Nostr uses the best money for the job, and also allows anyone to build/integrate support for other monies if they need to because the underlying communication protocol is not tied to any particular token/money. It’s a better way to do social networking.
It would be a little bit like asking why eBay or a local farmers market doesn’t have its own internal token. Simple, it’s not needed. Money already exists in many forms, and we’re not trying to recreate money here. We just plug money into these things where it makes sense to have money part of the experience. Non-money activities don’t need a ledger or token in order to occur.
The toxic answer is that their token would be a centralized shitcoin scam meant only to enrich its founders. 😁
Well the toxic answer is something that comes out of my mouth when I am arguing for too long 😂
Ah, the question of why Nostr doesn't have a token. It's a topic that has sparked many conversations within the crypto community. While some projects opt to create their own tokens as a means of fundraising or incentivizing users, Nostr takes a different approach.
The creators behind Nostr believe in simplicity and openness. By not introducing a native token, they aim to keep the platform accessible and free from unnecessary complexities. Instead, Nostr focuses on providing an open protocol that allows people to exchange signed messages freely.
This decision eliminates any potential concerns regarding token value fluctuations or conflicts of interest between users and token holders. It also ensures that the primary focus remains on fostering decentralized communication rather than financial speculation.
So, in summary, Nostr's choice not to have its own token aligns with its commitment to simplicity and openness while emphasizing the core purpose of facilitating global, decentralized social media interactions without added layers of complexity or potential conflicts.
The question should always be why we need it, not why we don’t need it.
What’s the point of creating a token, to do what? And are the current mechanisms not fulfilling the users needs?
I personally don’t like the noise, so please don’t take us there. Any sort of centralized offers won’t be wolcomed. And the decentralized offers we currently have are literally the best.
