Interesting. I imagine the AC use on local distribution has to do with the ease in creating relevant voltages for the application, eg. 12kV for short isolated runs to 6.5kV to pole transformers to 480/240/120 here in the US using smaller wires for the same power yield. I suppose HVDC for long isolated transmission would be more efficient, fewer inductive loses is my guess?
