I was doing some hiking this weekend in the communist land of California when I found this really cool aberrant checkerspot butterfly. It seems like it is a rare and potentially unique color abnormality that does not represent the appearance of any distinct species. It was surrounded by other Edith’s Checkerspots (Euphydryas editha), so I assume it was that species. Very cool and potentially a truly unique individual. Compare templates of Edith’s as depicted in the Kaufman butterfly guide.
