If you think trusted third parties are security holes, corporate hardware wallets also have to fall into that category.
IMHO, it's just tradeoffs all the way down.

True, while I recommend a good hw wallet for people just coming into the space, I made sure to tell them that they are still trusting the manufacturer/distributor not to install any backdoor, mess up, or introduce new security holes in the future.
It's all about tradeoffs.
