I harvested my first black soldier fly larvae out of my homemade bsfl bin this morning.

When I went out to tend to the chickens this morning, I noticed this little guy had dropped out of my bsfl bin 🙂🪰

Are you only using them for compost?

My plan was to use them as supplemental chicken feed.

From what I've read their poop needs to be further composted before it can be put into a garden.

I planned on making a worm bin for further composting. I just haven't got to making the worm bin yet.

Nice. Did the bsfs come on their own or did you order them? Did you design the bin? Looks a lot better than the rubber tub ones

Thanks. I captured them myself. It took about a month before I saw any activity.

I'm not sure but I think that adding a bunch of cooked macaroni noodles is what really attracted them.

The main downside to my design is that it will eventually rot away in a few years.

This was just an experiment, if successful I may make the base out of concrete. I could use something more durable for the walls & lid. Maybe the walls out of concrete? The possibilities are endless.
