Can someone please help me understand how VC funding works?

What do I do, and what happens when someone offers funding or asks to invest? Am I using the right terminology?

Can I still be open to finding a partner if I accept VC funds? Or, should I reject VC funding and hold out for a partnership?

What is the appropriate move and why?
