The dynamics make it actually more likely with something like Mastodon. While say Twitter is one large entity with a hand wavy commitment to free speech with nobody to answer to, you have dozens of smaller ones who have to police themselves and have to worry about anybody else who might not like their instance and start a cascade of banning, so users police themselves so their instance doesn’t ban them. like the spider men pointing guns. The more robust connectivity of having one user connected to multiple relays makes them less dependent on the relay (vs instance) and also gives the other relays less leverage in trying to go after one certain user. Not that it couldn’t happen but the fact that one user is tied to an instant makes mastodon much more conducive to this sort of dynamic.
