I’m a big fan of filter.nostr.wine
(No affiliation despite the name lol)
It aggregates popular free relays and filters out a ton of the spam in them. And it’s very smooth and fast to connect/load.

Also, you can disable specific relays in your global feed (in Damus, at least).
Most of us disable the free ones and then leave paid relays turned on.
Relayable.org is a free/donation-supported relay that also does some high quality filtering
Try both of those together and you’ll notice a significant difference
