Updating and improving the code is very different than changing the rules.

Bitcoin is like chess in that regard. Anybody can create their own versions, some may like the board to be hexagonal, some may think that there needs to be twice amount of pawns in play.

This is ok, and imo everybody can play how they want, but they still cannot change the rules of the game of chess anymore.
