That's because FSE rate limits our media proxy. If I turned off the media proxy it would make images on other instances load faster at the risk of sending your IP to them. Our instance would also perform better. But, that's the price you pay for security.

The way I see it the only reason why you'd rate limit a media proxy is so people are forced to pull the media directly from your server, exposing their own IPs. I consider this to be concerning at best, malicious at worst.

Then he started getting aggressive with the rate limiting. I couldn't watch videos from FSE and 200kB JPEGs from FSE were taking 8+ seconds to load. So I turned it back on. Now media_proxy does all the waiting around for the file and has it ready to go as soon as I try to load it from FSE. Videos play instantly now.
