"Carnot did not know the law according to which so to speak, the force of heat diminishes with the temperature height. He left it to his successors to find out. who labored long and vainly at it. They called it *Carnot's function*–a function being an unknown mathematical relation. The problem was not solved until in 1850 Clausius applied the principle of the conservation of energy."
