He discovered the ancient, pagan religion of gnosticism. His dabbling in 'pharmakaia' (chemically-induced spiritual experiences) opened him to the demonic realm, and thus to their deceptions.

Creator and creation are eternally distinct, the latter being utterly dependent on the former for its existence. Death is real, and it is an enemy, not a friend. Christ alone has defeated death for himself and his people.

"See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ." (Col. 2:8, ESV)
