Currently, the advance on the flanks aims to cut off the supply routes near the city, forcing Russian forces to withdraw from the Bakhmut which has become the center of one of the largest battles of the 21st century. Klishchiivka was occupied in January 2023, while Andriivka was lost in December 2022. After 10 months, both settlements are back under control, and further Ukrainian advances south of Bakhmut put at least some of the supply routes at risk.
