An update to this. I bought a small jar of Adam's peanut butter. I choose it because it was the only smooth peanut butter (I know peanuts don't actually break down well, so no point in buying chunky) that didn't also have palm oil or sugars.
It was several days before I even got around to opening it, mixing it up (natural peanut butter separates naturally, so need to mix the peanut oil back in to make it so that you're not getting a spoon of oil or a spoon of very dense peanut paste), and I saw that I just wasn't really drawn to it.
I also bought a small jar of raw honey. When I would raid the pantry, I would also tend to have a little honey to appease the sugar demons. Honey contains fructose, so this is really contrary to what I should be doing, but hey - keep the demons at bay.
I ended up (had more or less planned this) mixing some of the honey into the jar of peanut butter. After doing this, it became a million times harder to stop eating it. Instead of maybe a couple spoons worth, it was 5-6 spoons, and then maybe a couple more. I think the jar is half gone now.
This is really showing me a) the power of the sugar addiction, and b) the reality that this is a horrible plan. While this may be preferable to shoving a couple chocolate raised glazed dual-filled donuts in my face (my other go-to to appease the sugar demons), it is just not what I want to do. So, yes, I will finish this jar, as slowly as I can manage, and then, not again.
I'm going to make another note that will really spell out WHY I'm not willing to appease the sugar demons, but that should hopefully close the loop on peanut butter.
