Doing the southern loop of South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Botswana, and Namibia... they've held ties to the Communist countries since they got their independence.

Yeah, kinda. These continuous tribal wars were used as one of the justifications for the colonization in the 19th century. So not so strange that they came back when we left.
