What's worse, being too busy or getting bored at work?

Getting bored

Bored for sure.

Both at once. I hardly get to do so many tasks during the day, but many are repetitive.

Work can be interesting, but usually it is pretty much the same.

That's a good point, being busy doing a lot of very repetitive stuff sounds like the worst of both worlds.

Bored.

But being bored is nearly always a product of not applying your ability to iterate abs improve.

For example: there are times when I have dozens to hundreds of parts to build/weld. I always end up going through them faster than nearly anyone else with much more consistent results because I iterate on the process as I move through the batch. A little process tweak here and there, and I can usually cut down on the time to competion by over 50%, and that's only within what's immediately in control of what I'm doing. I'm actively working on taking more responsibility, yes, so I can get paid more, but, also because I want to be involved in the process BEFORE parts get to me and the rest of the guys in the shop so we all don't have to deal with crappy parts, which slows us down and increases part variability, both of which are undesirable.

That's cool, it's very satisfying to keep getting better at something. Do you get paid more depending on how many parts you can produce?

No, it's not directly related, but it helps, for sure.

It is very satisfying, and, quite frankly, the best defense against boredom there is.

Bored.. because my mind tends to start thinking of all the cool stuff I could be doing instead 🤔 🤣

Time just fucking drags on too
