Are they saying it's boring or are they saying that they never needed to use social media as often as they did? 🧐

This is a good point, and it aligns with my feeling about social media. I never really found anything I needed in the mainstream SMs except for Reddit.

I like the content here, it feels real and I can interact (even if I don’t have that much to say, really)

What exactly did you find useful about reddit? Like what characteristics drew you to that platform and not others?

In a way, Reddit was a prelude to nostr where anyone could post anonymously. The most important thing about Reddit though was the segregation of content, if I wanted to know something about a specific topic I could almost guarantee there was a subreddit for it.

It was also a great case study for self moderation, none of the moderators were compensated in any way but the content was good.

I wouldn’t have left if they had kept everything as it was but they had the API war and nuked all of the third party apps. This is why I like nostr

Interesting. How heavy was censorship on reddit?

It really depends, like I say the communities were self moderated. If anything was obviously illegal (and got media attention) then the company admins would step in and remove communities, but this didn’t happen often.

Other than that, subreddit moderators were in charge. There were science communities that were heavily moderated to keep information accurate, but the bulk of the subreddits were just kept to whatever standard the mods wanted. I wouldn’t say it was too heavy handed for the most part.

I enjoyed my 10+ years there. It was a shame when they ruined it with the API changes, their official app is dog shit and many heavy users left the platform
