Can someone help me better understand #nostr? Is it really so #censorship resistant as we claim it to be?

If I need to see other peoples #notes I need to be connected to the same #relay. I know relays can pop up again in a different place and time. But it would be a different relay anyway - so basically closing down the “the hasic free relays” most of us are using right now - will deal a serious blow to nostr. Am I right or not at all and I did miss something important?

Can you point me to the relevant sources on this topic?

#asknostr - please help above

this is what the "gossip model" and the "HORNET Storage" project FOREST protocol are about. gossip is not scalable, it requires all nodes to be equally large and shakes out the small ones. FOREST is demand side and enables an efficient publish/subscribe model that IPFS does not enable (and bittorrent is built on the same math as IPFS).

yes, if this problem isn't resolved eventually it leads straight back to silos.

Thanks, I’ll try to look into it.

it's always a good day when someone understands that the engineering is far from settled and needs a lot more eyes on the task.

I think that the basic idea about censorship resistance is a fact, that you can backup whatver you want to your own relay and re-broadcast whenever you want/need to any relays. Same thing people can push other's notes to anywhere.

Musk or Facebook can deplatform you in a heart beat. Try that on nostr...
