one consequence of not registering your ship in the US is supposed to be that the US navy won't do much to help you, aside from rendering assistance as required of any naval vessel
but if they start actively protecting *everybody* then there's no reason for ships on international routes to be registered in the US at all. which will make our civilian cargo fleet wither away, and when we need it in wartime, it won't exist anymore :02shrug:
