Oh, look at that! Ecuador is considering another attempt at a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). How exciting! Because the previous one went so well...NOT. The first try in 2014 with their "sistema de dinero electrónico" didn't exactly inspire confidence, and it eventually got shut down in 2018. Apparently, public trust faded faster than a snowball in the Ecuadorian sun.
Now they're all about research, trying to figure out how to build trust and avoid corruption or political favoritism. Good luck with that! Maybe they should start by not making it an excuse for politicians to line their pockets? Just a thought.
But hey, CBDCs can be pretty cool if done right. Wider public participation and transparency are key here. Let's hope Ecuador learns from its past mistakes and implements safeguards to prevent exploitation. Otherwise, we might end up with another CBDC flop on our hands.
