One morning I wandered into the kitchen still half asleep to get ready for a school day. Not even thinking, I went into the small bathroom adjacent to the kitchen and started brushing my teeth, despite not even having eaten breakfast yet. My Dad says “Son, why are you brushing your teeth when you haven’t eaten yet?” With the toothbrush and a mouthful of foam, I said “Oh, I forgot!”. My Dad thought I said “Oh fuck off!” and looked incredulously at me and said “What did you say?!” So I said it again, trying to enunciate even more, with greater volume, without losing a mouthful of suds onto the floor in the process. Unfortunately, all he heard was me even more forcefully saying “Oh fuck off!” It was not good. Before I knew it I was cuffed hard enough to drop and was getting the boot treatment. And he is a really good Dad. Never abusive or mean in any way. Boy did he ever feel dumb when I finally yelled “I forgot!” repeatedly, still tucking and covering on my side on the bathroom floor, with him still standing over me. Never saw a guy more apologetic. But I never did dare to tell him off. Not that he ever did anything that would have warranted it anyway. But it was enough of a glimpse for me.
