Parasites die when their host system dies.

Prudence would suggest we invest in making sure we can survive that...

If history is any guide, any such event will be unpredictable but not random:

- Don't be poor

- Don't be rich

- Don't be memorably different

- Do be resistant to infectious disease

- Do have a technological/economic toolkit that works even if its smashed down to village scale
