They're not just taking your date of birth. That scan provides them with all the identifiable information on the front of your ID.

That data gets tied to that purchase and then sold off to the highest bidder, more than likely an insurance company who will then raise health care premiums based off of how much alcohol you consume or how many packs of cigarettes you buy.
