I decided to be a true friend this evening and risk damaging our friendship by telling the truth in an attempt to help.

It took 2 hours and was very tense most of the time.

But it worked, they got it and they understand what I was telling them and will think about it carefully.

I never hold back if I think a friend needs to hear something. They can take it or leave it but have to accept that aspect of me to remain friends. Frankly, most people don't like that trait which is probably why I have a very small number of close friends. But I also don't agree with the broad definition of friendship, so I'm good with it. It's not even possible for me to have a large number of friends by my definition.

I only want friends who are willing to be like you when it makes sense.

Same. If I don’t care about someone, I just let it be, but the friends I care about I’ll tell them what they need to know, unfortunately it sometimes across hurtful. I need to work on my delivery, my wife on the other hand usually asks difficult questions which causes people to be introspective. I’m trying to take her lead.
