The hits keep coming when the market is already down!

📰 JUST IN - Chinese DeepSeek AI launches multimodal "Janus-Pro-7B" model with image input and output.

"This new model beats OpenAI's DALL-E 3 and Stable Diffusion across GenEval and DPG-Bench benchmarks."

It's already posted, too: https://huggingface.co/deepseek-ai/Janus-Pro-7B

And it's also under the MIT License.

The market might be taking a beating on this news, but in the long term, this surely only increases competition, right? I'm already hearing talk of "AI's Sputnik Moment."

Chances are, in my humble opinion, that in the long term, this only serves to pump the AI bubble harder and faster.

What do you think?

Fascinating, I wish I knew more about AI/ML. It seems like it's really a small, powerful group of companies out there controlling everything, but maybe open-source will even the playing field.

It does feel like some moats were just destroyed. And I could be wrong about this, but by my read the DeepSeek license (MIT) is more "free" than than Meta's Llama.

The real moat, in my opinion, is the ecosystems of the Mag7 "everything companies". Using their own models across all their verticals is what makes them extremely difficult to compete with because they have so much proprietary data and integration to leverage. Releasing LLMs to the public is a gesture of enough goodwill to take the heat off the fact the Mag7 have monopolistic advantages.

I believe the only thing the Big Tech giants have is network effect. Their only true asset is user-capture. Everything else is easily replicable
