How much do you net per burn?

Hard to say as it's always different based on the feed stock, I'd say on average 1/4 of the barrel. A retort would produce a fair bit more I think but I'm not ready to tackle that.

Ya, seems like it would be cleaner burning with a higher percentage remaining charcoal.

I've done this a few times. End up with a lot of tarry charcoal after. Any tips you can provide? Thinking of moving to a Retort with a 30gallon barrel in the 55gallon.

I'm not expert but I think if it's tarry it hasn't finish. You should be left with just the carbon. A Retort would definitely help finish it without losing as much to ash.
