To add to this thought, there is a little known exception in US law.
Slavery is still legal if the slave has been convicted of a crime. Prisoners in the for profit privately owned jails are forced to work to staff their own prison for "wages" usually under $1/hr in a land where gas stations and fast food joints pay 15x that amount and the absolute "legal" minimum for the unincarcerated is over $7/hr.
So not only have they been kidnapped, with no offer for ransom (bail) after conviction and sometimes even before conviction, they are then gifted by the state to private corporations to be used as slaves.
This is all true today in 2025.
