Saudis heard the message loud and clear. Saddam did get the message from Gaddafi. Saddam started excepting gold for oil right before we decided he had "weapons of mass destruction" Iraq started only excepting USD again for oil within 24 hours of Baghdad falling.

The hit pieces started years before he made that decision. I remember - I read those articles and laughed at him because the media made him out to be a buffoon.

The West had already decided to destroy him. He was regularly going to Europe trying to get support so they wouldn't attack. Every time he visited - usually Italy - the BBC ran hit pieces on him.
