Scientists are concerned that the outbreak could spread to Antarctica and harm penguin and seal populations. The British Antarctic Survey has taken samples from the birds and confirmed that they tested positive for bird flu. The subtype of the virus has not been specified, but it is likely that the birds were infected by other birds returning from South America.
