I mean it could be, but honestly it just makes things easier when you can collaborate, build upon, and improve each others work gracefully.

Most developers arent looking at this from a political aspect. More like how can i build something i want without reinventing the wheel, cut down on my development time greatly, or getting my ass sued into oblivion.

FOSS is almost always the answer.
