The storytelling has to A1 in great Sci Fi - for instance this is why I cant knock the source material for Star Wars and Star Trek and Alien etc even as though franchises have been spoiled by corporatist conservatism and greed.

But what I find so spectacular about these Dune movies is just how much world building is packed into the time and just how MASTERFUL it is.

Look no further than the BLACK SUN of Giedi Prime which renders all color to infrared Black & White. Imagine what such a world would do the human mind. Like the Harkonnens understand color BUT they understand even more that it is pointless to attempt to express it, at least where they are from. This gives SO MUCH MORE depth to the distributing mixture of opulence, austerity, and cruelty seen in their culture or at least in their leaders (Baron, Beast, Feyd).

Contrast this to Star Wars where you are just expected to accept that the Empire is wholly evil with little or no justification and that the rebels are good despite all their weird religious mysticism and penchant for child soldiers (which we know can only lead to the worst kind abuses).
