However, eventually we are due to be hit by a major em pulse from the sun that is expected to fry the grid on a global scale and we really don’t have a backup plan so essentially we’ll all be as good as broke.

Ya, but the problem is solar panels and anything electronic will also be fried. The last time a major occurrence like this happened was in 1859 and only the telegraph was available to get fried…..but things are a bit different now.
