The US generates 1/5 of its electricity from nuclear. If you take all the waste created here since the 1950s, it would fit on one (American) football field, stacked 10 yards high. The waste can also be reprocessed (which the US doesn’t do yet for some reasons) eliminating an extra 20-30% of the waste. Also, when contained properly, it has almost no effect on the surrounding environment.
Fossil fuel emissions are much worse, so we’ve been told, and do exponentially more harm to the environment for a fraction of the energy generated.
