The first sunbird (太陽鳥) of the season came to rest on a flower in the Master’s garden. It was there only a minute and then it was gone. The Master smiled and told his students: “This is how one understands virtue. When we cultivate discipline and Harmony in our lives, brief flashes of joy appear to sustain us for our hard work, and then they are gone until next season. If a junzi can be pleased with the sunbird’s brief appearance, no amount of despair on earth can defeat him.”
