took my first (non-farming) job at a pizza restaurant, back of house, for $4 per hour, under the table, no tips.

that was the correct price for my unskilled labor at the time. because that restaurant owner took a risk to bring me on underaged & far below minimum wage, I was fortunate enough to get my first real work experience & learn discipline, responsibility, punctuality, food service, and many invaluable social lessons early on.

by raising minimum wages in perpetuity states are just pricing out all labor participants whose work is actually valued at less than the state mandated rate on a free market. raising minum wage doesn’t magically allow an employer to afford now more expensive though less productive workers.

value yourself fairly & work hard at learning salable skills & growing & even with inflation & insane taxes you will be able to find productive work in this country & get a leg up.

One of the best things you can do as an employer today is offer to pay people in #Bitcoin. As an employee you should be asking for this or using direct deposit tools like strike to receive & save a percentage of your paycheck in #Bitcoin.

It’s called child labor

precisely!

Well said.

Nice post, agreed.

Markets should be the only mechanism of governance in human society.

Many orders of magnitude more computation are input into a market than a mandate. It makes sense why the outcomes in unimpeded markets are superior to centralized decree.

What many people don't realize is that the real minimum wage is zero

One does not even need to ask employer to be paid in Bitcoin. One can simply redirect all or part of his paycheck direct deposit to any bank account you wish. Today there are several ways to do that: strike, coinbase, kraken, gemini for starters. It's your money, your call. A smart one if you ask me.

yep

Disagree here. I agree that raising the minimum wage isn’t going to help. I disagree that industry is going to realize the value of labor. Corporations only maximize profit margins, a function of impetus from the shareholders who largely are the wealthy elite, a class that their workers don’t have meaningful access to. I think that reasonable organized labor is the answer. The unions need to stop being ridiculous and start recognizing that true power lays with the masses, not an easily controlled niche market like longshoremen or warehouse workers. Let the real blue collars tell the overlords what we really want.

My first job was as a barman as soon as I turned 18.

Minimum wage (ÂŁ6.70 per hour) but I got to keep 100% of tips I earned. Was really fun job tbh.

Setting a minimum wage really does limit the possibilities for first time, unskilled labor.

And the other thing that always goes through my head is the idea that many companies get free skilled labor in the form of internships (which I am certainly fine with as it is a voluntary arrangement amongst parties). But why is it that the “minimum wage” does not apply to these positions?? To me it is a system of privilege that is only availed to some. A way to earn experience and skills and trade just your time.
