Got a free macbook air, with M1 chip. Evidently cannot wipe and install a *nix OS on it (correct me), so just updating to Big Sur for now. Is there a better way/use? Is there a halfway decent terminal replacement?

Might put Start9 on a VM

Want to do something smart with it

Thoughts?

hiii not really related but wanted to ask

why choose start9 for your preferred home server? I'm trying to figure out what I should use and nothing seems to fit my use case enough.

Thankssss

Better than umbrel 🤙🏼

all I needed to hear

ty

btw, just tried it out wasn't able to get cloudflared or tailscale installed on it persistently

do you use anything like that that works?

I suggested start9 because of my poor experience with umbrel staying connected, forcing hard resets every few days. When it was working, though, the tailscale worked pretty well

i got tailscale working, but had to try twice.

any tips? I legit could not figure it out

what do I even need to do?? it's actually insane the normal ssh isn't even persistent -_-

I really didnt know I was doing and just followed instructions.

and the second time it just worked as long as you have both the client and the server setup together. where are you stuck?

I kept getting stuck on having tailscale stay after rebooting

I didn't know how to properly use the scripts like upgrade-and-chroot or add-apt-source or wtv

I couldn't find any documentation or help for any of this it sucked so baddd

i dont recall having to use any scripts when i did it. Just installed it on start9 from the marketplace.

whatttt no way

with the official marketplace or did you find a different one?! I didn't see it there

you are right my mistake.

I think I am hallucinating tonight sorry

I have tailscale running on a seperate machine with umbrel

ohhh that sucks

so you don't have tailscale on startos? sadgee it's okay tho ty

Seems still very much WIP

If any Linux alternative would do, your only option is https://asahilinux.org/about/. There are some remixes as well, e.g. https://asahilinux.org/fedora/.

You can try asahi Linux then run start9 but i haven’t played too much with it
