Sorry to butt in here with an akkshuually lol. But 'working +40 years in a job you don't absolutely hate' isn't normal, I would say that sort of job security is practically unheard of for the average person. 40+ years rotating 2 or 3 jobs and constantly finding replacements, is perhaps more 'normal'.
