I studied type pre-internet, with early versions of dtp/design tools of today but much study still involved layouts (paper, scalpels, 3M spray) and for fonts and typography, reference like Letraset books. Although that was all about to change, it was still concept to final design by hand. Nearly all print. Today, a typographer for digital needs 95% front-end to realize their typography skills.
I do agree with the premise of the article that web design is mostly about typography. I envy the really good typography pros. I’ve never been able to immerse myself fully in web design the way some people have.
