Nah, I wouldn't go that far. There are leftists who believe in God. Its the "ism" that's the problem. Both isms are trying to be God. Its a lack of humility. Both isms think they have a right to tell other people how to live.

Since most leftists are atheistic, it might be more accurate to say it’s a rebellion against mom and dad, or against the natural order.

There's definitely some kind of rebellion going on. The furthest left person I know had a very right wing authoritarian dad - he even had to call him "sir" growing up. I can only imagine what else must've been going on... I think I would've rebelled too in his case. It's just that he then went to the extreme and ate up all the Marxist shit, which is just more authoritarianism.
